“What Would It Take to Change the World?”
“What would it take to change the world”: One to offer a kind word? One to stand as an ardent advocate with the bullied or intimidated? One to offer his/her time graciously to a community project? One to commit to the greater good of society over one’s self? Or one to care about a stranger? One really is all that it takes to change the world. One small but mighty person can ignite inspiration, craft cooperation, and trigger transformation in a copious world. One response to the Rotary’s question is Ali. Congratulations to the honoree, Alison Lampman, for the recognition as November’s Rotary Student of the Month for having a weighty work ethic, strong sense of responsibility, and intense integrity.
Whether on the court or in class, Ali plays a significant role. Ali’s athleticism is extensive on the court, on the field, and at the net: four years playing varsity volleyball where she was captain her junior and senior years; three years on the varsity basketball team where she was captain her junior year; and four years on the varsity softball team in which she was captain her junior year and recognized with All-District and All-Region honors. While committing herself to athletics for a great deal of the year, she also takes a strong leadership role in the classroom as she has been on the Honor Roll and All “A” Honor since her freshman year, which is reflected in her high grade point average of 3.704. Between finding time to stand out in the and in the gym, Ali has also managed to support her community and district.
Initiative, leadership, and innovativeness are quintessential traits that create towering characters like Ali’s; traits that are validated by the many organizations she is associated. As selected by the Yearbook adviser, Ali represents the yearbook staff as editor – in – chief, and she enthusiastically led her team to earn a “Sparty Award” at the Midwest Independent Publishers Association (MIPA) during the summer of 2012. Furthermore, the Bellaire Chapter of the National Honor Society also celebrated Ali’s accomplishments and her contributions on fulfilling the four pillars by embracing her membership in the fall of 2011 and commended her with the “Good Citizen Award.” As a tower of strength to her peers, this dedicated student has served many roles for her class: Sophomore Class Secretary, Junior Class Vice President, and as Senior Class Vice President. However, Ali’s generosity expands beyond her school and into the community where she has volunteered with Bellaire Youth Basketball and St. Luke’s Youth Group, and partook in numerous charity activities as a member of Student Council for two years. Ali’s civic responsibility and dedication to excellence will serve her well as she transitions on to her next odyssey.
In a short four years, Alison Lampman has proved that one person can make changes in the world that will exponentially be effective. “What does it take to change the world?” It takes citizens like Ali who help carry peers when they are at their weakest. It takes parents like Karen and Jeff Lampman who carry their child until he/she is ready to stand alone against the pressures of society. It takes a community like Bellaire that carries its students until they are ready to challenge the world’s best and worst. Ali is well deserving of this honor, not because of her academic achievements, contributions to her community, and the leadership she models, but because of the differences she will make to better the world. Congratulations, Ali!

The Rotary motto of, “Service above self,” depicts the April Rotary Student of the Month, Katie Odom, daughter of Al and Cathy Odom. As a member of the Miss Bellaire Scholarship program for two years (2010 Miss Bellaire court member and 2011 1st Runner Up), Katie has donated over 100 hours of service to the village of Bellaire as a dedicated ambassador. This, however, is not the only area of Katie’s service; she has also volunteered her services to help her class for the past four years with activities such as fund raising, float building, Prom Committee, Powder Puff, pep assembly class participant, vice-president/junior year, and secretary/senior year. Further, as a member of the Bellaire Chapter of the National Honor Society since her junior year, she has demonstrated service through the many service projects that the organization sponsors including speaking at honor roll assemblies for the student body and the annual Bellaire High School Honors Night. Katie attends St. Luke’s Catholic Church where she has also provided her talents to numerous service projects.
Academically, Katie is superlative; she currently holds a 3.56 grade point average, which will earn her High Honors for graduation. Katie has been on the honor roll every nine weeks during her high school career; this has granted her an Academic certificate (freshman), Academic letter (sophomore), Academic pin (junior), and Academic lamp (senior.) This past fall Katie placed 2nd in the annual Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by the VFW. Further, Katie has been a member of the Yearbook staff for two years. Katie juggles all her academic standards along with her service with being a three-sport athlete.
|
Her participation in extra-curricular activities is also top notch. In the fall, Katie ran cross-country for four years where she was also selected captain her junior and senior years. In the winter she played junior varsity basketball and was also a member of the bowling team where she earned the honor to bowl at the 2011 State Finals. For the spring, she has been a four-year member of the track team (senior captain) specializing in the long distance runs. Next fall, Katie will be attending Northwestern Michigan College to study nursing. Bellaire High School proudly recognizes Katie Odom as the April Rotary Student of the Month. Bravo, Katie for your outstanding scholarship, leadership, service, and character. |

Congratulations to Nick Krommendyk, son of Dan and Sue Krommendyk, on being selected the February Rotary Student of the Month. Nick moved to Bellaire last year from Missouri, and Bellaire High School quickly learned Nick’s positive, kind, respectful, hard working character. Nick currently holds a 3.87 grade point average and was inducted into the Bellaire Chapter of the National Honor Society this year. Nick has earned All A’s honor roll his entire high school career, and he prides himself with his academic endeavors especially with math and history.
After his move to Bellaire in January of 2010, Nick joined the varsity basketball team. Then, he became one of the standouts on the varsity baseball team especially with his role as a starting pitcher. In both of these sports he earned Academic recognition—Ski Valley Academic All Conference (basketball) and Academic All District (baseball). In the fall of 2010, Nick participated on the varsity soccer team where he was named Captain and was recognized as All Conference. Further, he was the Bellaire soccer team’s representative for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. In mid-March Nick will again put on his baseball cleats, as he will lead the 2011 varsity baseball team.
Outside of school, Nick is a member of the New Hope Community Church’s youth group. With his youth group as well with NHS, Nick enjoys helping out with numerous community service projects. Nick’s future plans are to attend Michigan Tech University to study civil engineering. Again, BRAVO, Nick! The Job Winslow Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Scholarship Program awarded Emily Cybulla, daughter of Marjorie and Thomas Cybulla of Bellaire, as their second-place winner of the Good Citizenship Award. Emily was selected as the sole representative from the Bellaire senior class to compete in the program, along with 29 seniors from other schools.
The scholarship process consisted of two writing parts to demonstrate the student’s characteristics to an outstanding degree: first, a personal description about her attributes; second, a timed essay that replies to an unknown topic. To demonstrate her service to others, leadership, dependability, and patriotism, Emily’s personal description included a vast account of the many committees she has served on in her school and community. Her future plans reflected her ambition and a focus on philanthropy, for she intends to pursue a degree in the medical field and then volunteer in third-world countries in a clinical setting where she “overall hopes to make a difference.”
Emily will be honored on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at the Elks Club of Traverse City. Upon request, she will read the essay she composed about the topic, “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It”. Congratulations, Emily!
